Yacht Management MARPOL Annex 1. A key requirement of MARPOL Annex 1 is the Oil Record Book (ORB).  The ORB is an official document and must be completed accurately as it is a vital piece of evidence.  It is completed by the engineer in charge of the operation and signed by the Master to warrant that the entries are true and correct. Entries are required as and when operations occur and in any case on a weekly basis to record the quantities of oil residues (sludge) retained on board.

The key sections in the ORB are listed below:

  • (A) – Ballasting or cleaning of oil fuel tanks
  • (B) – Discharge of dirty ballast or cleaning water from oil fuel tanks referred to under section (A)
  • (C) – Collection, transfer and disposal of oil residues (sludge)
  • (D) – Non -automatic starting of discharge overboard, transfer or disposal otherwise of bilge water which has accumulated in machinery spaces
  • (E) – Automatic starting of discharge overboard, transfer or disposal otherwise of bilge water which has accumulated in machinery spaces
  • (F) – Condition of the oil filtering equipment
  • (G) – Accidental or other exceptional discharges of oil
  • (H) – Bunkering of fuel or bulk lubricating oil
  • (I) – Additional operational procedures and general remarks
